The Hermitage

The Hermitage is a Harmonist community where our goal is to live in harmony and union with earth and spirit.

The Hermitage is sacred space, carefully curated over three decades to evoke a sense of inner and outer peace with the spirit, incarnated as the earth and all living things.

Located in the central Pennsylvania mountains and the valley known as Mahantongo, the founding brothers have created a village of craft buildings and exhibit spaces by moving and adaptively reusing old log and timber-frame structures to the site. The Mahantongo Heritage Center is located in the barn. The site also includes a sculpture garden, a library, a spinning and weaving studio, a restored one-room school house, a restored general store, a 1758 community house, a letter press print shop, as well as buildings for daily living.

The 63-acre site is home to domesticated animals and birds, as well as a wide variety of wild creatures and functions as an arboretum providing a safe place for a variety of plants and trees.

The Hermitage is open to the public by appointment from June through October. The annual open house for 2024 will be Sunday, August 11 from Noon to 4 p.m. and will feature a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch bake day at the 200-year-old outdoor brick bake oven, as well as demonstrations of spinning. Tours will be available of several buildings provided by volunteers.

The Hermitage is located at 75 Grove Road, Pitman, PA 17964.
